Character Building
Abstract
This study presents a biographical analysis of Bujuk Ardhiba, a revered elder figure in the collective memory of the Bringen community, Bangkalan Regency, East Java. The aim of this research is to document and analyze the exemplary values embedded in Bujuk Ardhiba’s way of life, particularly those related to moral leadership, social harmony, and the sustainability of Madurese cultural values. The study employs a qualitative approach using literature review and oral history methods, supported by perspectives from cultural anthropology, sociology, and the Islamic traditions of Nahdlatul Ulama.
The findings reveal that Bujuk Ardhiba’s social position was not established through formal authority, but rather through consistent conduct that reflected sincerity, simplicity, self-restraint, and coherence between words and actions. Such exemplary behavior positioned him as an ethical reference and a social balancer within the community, especially in conflict resolution through deliberation and ethical conduct. The study further emphasizes that Bujuk Ardhiba’s primary legacy is non-material, consisting of values such as sincerity, openness, harmony, and responsibility in preserving social cohesion. This research contributes to the preservation of local wisdom by positioning the biography of an elder figure as a source of moral learning that remains relevant for contemporary generations.
